ICELAND Articles

Venturing through Iceland is a once in a lifetime experience. You’ll travel through some of the world’s most breathtaking and unique landscapes, including active volcanoes, colossal glaciers, spouting geysers, and cascading waterfalls. Most trips begin in Reykjavik, Iceland’s vibrant capital city and cultural epicenter. From there, first time visitors often embark on a several day tour through the country along Highway 1, the route encircling the island, known as the Ring Road.

From Reykjavik, travel east to the Golden Circle. This area features Þingvellir National Park, the geothermal wonder of Geysir, and the massive Gullfoss waterfall. Continuing to the southern coast, the most popular area of Iceland, you’ll witness majestic black sand beaches, the powerful Skógafoss waterfall, and dazzling icebergs in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

Rent a 4×4 and head inland to the remote Icelandic Highlands. From the colorful hills of Landmannalaugar to the moss-covered volcanic canyons of Þórsmörk and Þakgil, there’s no shortage of amazing landscapes in this region. The geothermal paradise of Kerlingarfjöll and the crystal-clear waters of Langisjór are two other incredible sites that belong on any Highlands itinerary.

For a more off-the-beaten-path trip, travel to the rugged coastline, hidden hot springs, and picturesque fishing villages in the Westfjords. In winter, the Northen Lights put on a stunning show, while in summer the midnight sun provides endless opportunities for exploration. Whether you’re looking for amazing landscapes, a variety of geological phenomena, rich cultural history, or just a sheer sense of adventure, Iceland is sure to leave an indelible mark on every visitor.
