CINQUE TERRE’S SENTIERO AZZURRO: GUIDE TO HIKING THE FIVE VILLAGES

OVERVIEW

Hiking through Cinque Terre in Italy is a breathtaking journey through five colorful seaside villages—Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso—perched along the Ligurian coast. The main coastal path, known as Sentiero Azzurro (or the Blue Trail), offers stunning views of terraced vineyards, dramatic cliffs, and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea

Though some sections can be steep and uneven, the trail is well-marked and accessible for most hikers with moderate fitness. Each village along the way offers its own charm, from fresh seafood and gelato to medieval architecture and quaint harbors. Hikers often pause to swim, take photos, or enjoy local cuisine before continuing.

In this article, you’ll find practical tips on each trail section, ticket requirements, what to pack, and how to make the most of your time in each village. You’ll also learn about alternate paths, how to avoid crowds, and when to go for the best experience. Whether you’re a casual walker or an avid hiker, this guide will help you plan an unforgettable journey through one of Italy’s most picturesque landscapes.

LOGISTICS

Trail Permit

To hike the Cinque Terre Blue Trail, a trail pass called the Cinque Terre Trekking Card is required for certain sections, particularly the coastal paths between Monterosso, Vernazza, and Corniglia.

The card grants access to the paid hiking trails, particularly along the coastal route (Sentiero Azzurro). It also includes park services like guided tours and shuttle buses. As of 2025, the daily cost is around €7.50 per person, with discounts available for children, seniors over 70, families, and multi day passes.

The Cinque Terre Treno MS Card includes all the benefits of the Trekking Card plus unlimited train travel on the Levanto–La Spezia line, which connects all five villages. The Treno Card is ideal if you plan to combine hiking with train travel between towns. The price varies by season (applicable during peak periods from mid May to early November), ranging from €19.50 to €32.50 depending on travel dates.

Choose the Trekking Card if you’ll hike only and not ride the trains. Both cards can be purchased at park offices, train stations, or online. The card helps fund trail maintenance and visitor services and can be purchased at park entry points, train stations, or online.

Some alternative inland trails are free and don’t require a permit. It’s important to check trail conditions in advance, as sections are occasionally closed for maintenance or due to weather damage.

Hiking Direction

Most visitors hike in the northwest direction from Riomaggiore to Monterosso, tackling the easier sections early and leaving the tougher climbs for later. However, from 9 am to 2 pm during certain weekends in April and May, some trail sections—especially from Monterosso to Vernazza—may be restricted to one-way travel to manage crowd flow. Always check current trail rules and signage before starting your hike.

Conditions and Closures

Trail closures in Cinque Terre are common and often unpredictable due to weather damage, landslides, or maintenance. Even well-used sections can shut without notice, so it’s essential to check current conditions before starting your hike.

Weather and trail conditions can also affect safety—rain can make paths slippery. There are also more precarious sections with steep steps, rocky paths, and narrow trails. Overall, with proper preparation, awareness, and respect for trail rules, it’s a safe and rewarding experience for most hikers.

Trail Requirements and Recommendations

In addition to a valid Cinque Terre Trekking Card, good walking shoes are mandatory. Flip-flops are not allowed and may result in substantial fines. During the peak summer season, early starts are encouraged to avoid crowds and heat.

WHAT TO PACK

Here’s a practical list of what to bring on the trail:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes (with good grip; trails are rocky and uneven)
  • Daypack (lightweight and comfortable)
  • Reusable water bottle (there are refill stations in villages)
  • Snacks or energy bars (limited options on the trail itself)
  • Cinque Terre Trekking Card (required for coastal sections)
  • Map or offline trail app (e.g., Maps.me, AllTrails)
  • Breathable, moisture-wicking clothing
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Light rain jacket or windbreaker (weather can change quickly)
  • Layers (especially in spring or fall)
  • Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF
  • Phone + portable charger
  • Cash (some small vendors or cafes may not take cards)
  • Small first aid kit (band-aids, blister pads, etc.)
  • Trekking poles (optional, helpful on steeper sections)
  • Swimsuit and towel (if you plan to swim in the sea)

WHEN TO HIKE

The best time to hike the Cinque Terre Trail is during the spring and fall, specifically April to early June and September to October. These months offer mild weather, blooming landscapes, and fewer crowds compared to the peak summer season. Temperatures are comfortable for hiking, and most trail sections are open and well-maintained.

Summer (July and August) can be very crowded and hot, with temperatures often exceeding 90°F, making midday hiking difficult and potentially dangerous. If you visit in summer, start early in the morning to avoid the heat and enjoy a quieter trail.

Winter months (November to March) bring cooler temperatures, occasional rain, and the risk of trail closures due to maintenance or landslides, though the villages remain open year-round. Always check trail conditions with the Cinque Terre National Park before setting out.

CINQUE TERRE TOWNS AND TRAIL DETAILS

Riomaggiore
Town

Riomaggiore is the southernmost village in Cinque Terre, known for its colorful cliffside homes that appear stacked along the rugged coastline. The town exudes a laid-back charm, with narrow cobbled lanes, cozy seaside restaurants, and sweeping views of the Ligurian Sea.

Its small marina is a perfect place to relax, watch fishing boats come and go, or take in a striking sunset. The main street, Via Colombo, runs through the heart of the village and is lined with local shops, cafés, and gelaterias offering a taste of regional flavor.

Trail

Riomaggiore marks the beginning of the famous Sentiero Azzurro trail and the first segment leads to the village of Manarola. Hikers can choose from two distinct routes, each offering a very different experience.

The Via dell’Amore (Lovers’ Lane), when open, is a paved, flat, and wheelchair-accessible path that hugs the cliffs but sits lower and closer to the sea. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll, offering romantic views and easy access for all abilities.

The more demanding option is Trail 531 (Via Beccara), a rugged uphill path with steep stone steps that climbs over a ridge before descending into Manarola. Though physically challenging, it rewards hikers with sweeping vistas of the Ligurian coastline and a greater sense of adventure and solitude. We opted for this route, and while it was tiring, we found it to be the more fulfilling and worthwhile experience.

Manarola
Town

The stunning town of Manarola features pastel buildings clinging to the nearby cliffside above a tiny harbor carved from stone. Known for its photogenic views and romantic vibe, the village feels both lively and intimate. Narrow streets lead to wine shops, cafes, and overlooks where locals gather at sunset.

Manarola is famous for its local Sciacchetrà wine, produced from grapes grown on steep terraces. The sea is central here—swimmers dive into the harbor from rocks, and boats bob in the cove. Despite its popularity, it retains a laid-back rhythm, especially in the evenings when day-trippers leave and the village becomes quiet and golden with fading light.

Manarola is our favorite of the five Cinque Terre towns. We stayed at Torreta Lodge, a quiet retreat tucked into the hillside with breathtaking views of the village and coastline—a perfect place to unwind after a day on the trails.

Trail

The direct coastal path from Manarola to Corniglia is often closed due to landslides, but the alternate route through Volastra offers a scenic, rewarding hike.

It begins with a steep stair climb to Volastra, a hilltop hamlet with panoramic sea views and terraced vineyards. From there, the trail levels out, winding through olive groves and shaded forest paths before descending toward Corniglia.

It’s a quieter route than the main coastal trail, with fewer crowds and a deeper sense of connection to the landscape, making it a favorite among repeat visitors.

Statistics and Map

Corniglia
Town

Corniglia, the quietest of Cinque Terre’s five villages, sits atop a cliff surrounded by terraced vineyards and sea views. Unlike its seaside neighbors, it lacks a direct harbor, adding to its secluded charm. Narrow alleys, stone houses, and a laid-back atmosphere make it feel more local than touristy.

A climb of nearly 400 steps from the train station leads to its heart, where you’ll find a central square, cozy cafés, and stunning coastal panoramas. Corniglia’s slower pace offers a peaceful retreat, perfect for soaking in village life and nature without the crowds common in the other Cinque Terre towns.

Trail

The trail from Corniglia to Vernazza winds through olive groves, vineyards, and Mediterranean scrub, offering panoramic views of the Ligurian coast. It begins with a gentle climb, followed by a series of switchbacks and stone steps, all surrounded by lush greenery and ocean vistas.

The path is well-marked but uneven in spots, so good footwear helps. Along the way, glimpses of Vernazza’s colorful buildings appear in the distance, making the journey even more rewarding.

Statistics and Map
  • Distance: 2.1 miles (3.4 km)
  • Elevation Gain: 700 feet (213 meters)
  • Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours

Vernazza
Town

Arguably the most beautiful town on the Cinque Terre coast, Vernazza is a vibrant harbor village with a unique charm, where colorful homes curve around a small bay filled with boats. A medieval tower rises above, offering sweeping sea views, while narrow alleys lead to cafes and seaside terraces.

It feels both lively and authentic, with a balance of tourism and local life. The central piazza by the water is perfect for relaxing with gelato or wine. Vernazza’s blend of beauty, history, and energy makes it a Cinque Terre favorite.

Trail

The trail from Vernazza to Monterosso is one of Cinque Terre’s most scenic—and most demanding. It begins with a steep ascent out of Vernazza, then winds through terraced vineyards, cliffs, and shaded woods.

Narrow paths, stone steps, and incredible sea views make the effort worthwhile. Monterosso slowly comes into view as you descend toward the beach. The hike takes about two hours and requires good footing, but rewards with incredible vistas and the refreshing finish of Monterosso’s waterfront charm.

Monterosso

Monterosso is the largest and most resort-like of the Cinque Terre villages, split into two sections: the old town and the newer beachside area, Fegina

It offers the region’s best sandy beach, lined with umbrellas, and a lively promenade with restaurants, shops, and gelaterias. The old town features narrow streets, pastel buildings, and a more traditional feel.

Monterosso has a relaxed, vacation-friendly vibe, making it ideal for longer stays. Its historic church, cliffside trails, and vibrant waterfront make it both scenic and accessible, balancing classic coastal charm with modern comforts that appeal to a wide range of travelers.

FINAL IMPRESSIONS

Cinque Terre showcases a uniquely rewarding blend of natural beauty, cultural charm, and accessible adventure. Hiking from village to village along the Sentiero Azzurro immerses travelers in stunning coastal scenery and the vibrant character of each town.

Whether tackling steep stone paths or wandering through cobbled alleys, each step brings new views, flavors, and moments of wonder. With thoughtful preparation—trail permits, proper footwear, and seasonal planning—visitors can enjoy a safe and unforgettable journey.
